Volvo EM90 | CarBuzz

Volvo introduces its first electric minivan, the EM90, not destined for the U.S. It shares architecture with the Zeekr 009, featuring a single 268-hp electric motor and 116 kWh battery for a 459-mile range, and also supports bi-directional charging. The interior boasts luxurious lounge seating, multiple screens, and advanced tech. The driver-assist suite includes surround sensors and semi-autonomous functionality. The EM90's design aligns with Volvo's EV standards, with unique front-end features.

Volkswagen ID.7 | Motor Authority

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.7, an electric sedan, blends classic touring car style with modern electric efficiency. Arriving in the U.S. in 2024, it offers single or dual-motor options, a 77-kwh usable battery, and a comfortable, quiet ride. With an understated design, it measures 195.3 inches, featuring a 117.0-inch wheelbase. The 210 kw motor accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds. The interior boasts massaging seats, a 15.0-inch touchscreen, and advanced voice commands. U.S. pricing, trims, and charging times are pending. Expected range is around 350 miles, with 175 kw DC fast charging.

BYD Sea Lion 07 | Electric

BYD teases the Sea Lion 07, a new electric SUV in its Ocean series, designed by ex-Audi and Lamborghini chief designer Wolfgang Egger. Following September's record sales of 151,193 EVs, BYD aims to surpass Tesla's Q3 delivery figures. The Sea Lion 07, set for official reveal on November 17, is expected to start at $26,000, challenging Tesla's Model Y in China. BYD's in-house production, lower prices ($17,000-$30,000), and global expansion contribute to its EV market competitiveness.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued recalls for various vehicles, including 42,742 Mercedes-Benz models (2019-2020 A 220, 2020 CLA 250, GLB 250, AMG A35, AMG CLA 35, and 2021 GLA 250) for a rear brake pad issue. Other recalls involve 3,557 Triumph motorcycles, 950 General Motors Cruise AV autonomous cars, 519 Honda Pilot SUVs, 159 Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles, and a small number of Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 (2024) and GLS 580 SUVs (2020). Issues range from brake problems to airbag installation errors and sunroof software glitches.

Hyundai starts a $1.5 billion electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility in Ulsan, South Korea, set for completion by 2025. Capable of producing 200,000 EVs annually, full-scale manufacturing begins in early 2026, focusing on Genesis electric SUVs. Hyundai's commitment contrasts with rivals like Ford and General Motors cutting EV production. In the U.S., Hyundai Motor Group holds the second-largest EV market share (7.5%), with 852,904 new EVs registered in 2023. Hyundai's investment extends to Georgia, allocating $5.5 billion for battery facilities and EV technology advancement.

In 2026, the electric vehicle (EV) landscape will undergo a transformation with the introduction of an industry-standard diagnostic system. California leads by mandating this in the Advanced Clean Cars II program for all 2026 models. The standardized system covers critical EV components, aiming to improve diagnostics, address issues like "bricking," and enhance service satisfaction. Some, like Rivian and Lucid, are already incorporating elements of the 2026 diagnostic system in their current models.

A study reveals that electric vehicles experience higher depreciation (49.1%) after five years compared to internal combustion engine cars and hybrids. Factors include incentives and battery replacement costs. The Tesla Model S shows the highest depreciation (55.5%), while the Model 3 has the lowest (42.9%). The limited scope includes Tesla Model 3, Model X, Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Bolt EV, and Tesla Model S. The study raises concerns about long-term EV desirability and potential environmental impact. Porsche 911 has the lowest traditional car depreciation (9.3%).

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) offer a balanced experience, combining electric power with an internal combustion engine. PHEVs, more reliable and budget-friendly than gas-only vehicles, now qualify for federal tax credits up to $7,500. The expanding charging infrastructure and improved electric ranges make it an opportune time to buy a PHEV, avoiding future restrictions on gas-powered vehicles. PHEVs demonstrate cost savings in maintenance, repairs, and fuel, making them a favorable choice in the evolving automotive landscape.
